THE LIMELITERS
The Limeliters (Collector's Choice)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Albums by the Limeliters are among the most treasured remnants of my dwindling collection of vintage vinyl, so I'm especially pleased to have this, their first release, on a more durable format. Recorded just a few months after the group formed in 1959, it contains all the elements that would become Limeliters trademarks - sensitive arrangements of traditional songs from a variety of sources and traditions, a well developed social conscience, satirical humor that was topical at the time and timeless today and the exceptional musicianship of Lou Gottleib, Glenn Yarbrough and Alex Hassilev.

If you missed the Great Folk Scare of the early sixties, this is a great chance to catch up with one of the great groups of the era. If you think of the Kingston Trio as typical of the times, this CD will be a revelation (though Gottleib was known to throw the Trio an arrangement now and then). And if you've somehow managed to miss hearing Glenn Yarbrough it's high time you became familiar with one of the great tenor voices in the history of American popular music.

Me, I'm going to take a break now and enjoy the pop and click free experience of the Limeliters one more time....
