NATHAN WILEY
Bottom Dollar (NAW)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

"Bottom Baby Dollar" that is. Nathan Wiley croons and swaggers like a boozed up scribe reeling in a Tom Waits universe: "I smell like a backlot / I crack like a whip." Managing to squeeze a very distinct carny vibe from his band, Wiley comes across as a grizzly veteran of the downtown scene, when in actuality he's just a kid from PEI. The record then slides into a smoother, almost countrified mode. Quickly slotted into the singer-songwriter category, paving a path to endless folk festivals in the Praries, Wiley may evolve into something much grander. As David Lowery aptly sung a while back: "what the world needs now is another folk singer / like I need a hole in my head." Hopefully this is just the beginning.
