Brazilian Love Affair, The Essence of Brazilian Chill Out (Far Out Recordings)

Reviewed by Rusty Pipes

Chill Out is coming on.

This Brazilian take on the genre really isn't very chilly though. It's actually hot in its own way, but it's got that classic Brazilian take on cool, that intricate jazzy kind of polyrhythm that can have you into dancing the night away and yet works well as a sexy background.

There's slick samba and bossanova tracks that are very traditional like Los Ladrones' "Las Luces Del Norte" ("Light of the North" unless I'm terribly mistaken), and others like Otto's "Retratista" are very modern. Generally everything's instrumental, heavy on the rhythm section with acoustic guitar and flute on lead a la Brazil 66, but there are some fine vocal performances in there too such as Luciana Mello's "Calados."

This is great stuff, a fun listen full of quality tracks. Use it on your friends that listen the local Wave station, you know, to wean them off that sappy musak-jazz. This is the real thing.
