Still Phishin' - A Bluegrass Tribute To Phish Vol. 2 (CMH)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Multi-instrumentalist David West and his CMH crew are back with another bluegrass flavored collection of jam band tunes in the mode of Pickin' On The Dead and Gone Phishin'. Still Phishin' collects ten more songs from the Phish catalog and delivers them up in a way that's bound to please phans of the band as well as anyone with an ear for well played country acoustic instrumentals.

The nine musicians involved in the project come together in a variety of ensembles, with West, Dennis Caplinger and Barry Waldrep each capable of handling most any instrument in a classic bluegrass lineup. They're backed by a crew of specialists on harmonica, percussion, bass, fiddle and guitar, allowing an amazing potential for creative arrangements. Caplinger solos on a pair of self produced cuts, Waldrep leads a band on four produced by Randy Hunter and the rest are products of West's California based CMH stable. No matter what the source is, the musicianship is consistently excellent, the material is drawn from one of the most popular songbooks in contemporary music and the total effect is invariably enjoyable.
