DONALD CURRIE
Sex & Mayhem Part One (self-released)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Interesting, spoken-word/audiobook autobiography of San Francisco
performance artist Donald Currie and his story of coming-of-age and being
gay in the 50's and 60's. The stories here are great, and wonderfully
delivered, and while most of the chapters seem to tie the album together
into one long monologue about being a shy, gay college student, there are
sidetracks into wonderful little anecdotes, such as the one about his
introduction to movies (he grew up in a home with no television and his
first introduction to film apparently terrified him) and his growing
obsession with dressing like Marilyn Monroe. The album is fun and baudy and
very well done, and I look forward to hearing Part Two when it comes out.
