GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS
Who Do You Love? (Rounder)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

George Thorogood has made a lot of albums and played a lot of shows over the last quarter century or so, but it would be pretty hard to argue that he's ever made music more satisfying than he did on his first three Rounder albums. The best material from those albums, along with a previously unreleased live version of the title cut, are collected on this Rounder Heritage compilation. Hitting the shelves at a time when most artists were looking for ways to sweeten their sound, Thorogood and his bandmates, the Delaware Destroyers, had a seemingly contrary impulse to fill every groove with all the dirt and sweat they could summon, with Thorogood's slide screaming over a straight, hard beat.

It's a formula that's as exciting today as it's ever been, and these tracks are as much fun now as the day they were first released. The Heritage series is devoted to what Rounder calls Essential Music, and in this case they're absolutely right.
