POTION
Circa (Potion)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This album was particularly distressing to listen to. For one thing, the
album looked like something I'd really like - it's got a retro 70's-type cover
with bad orange trim and splashy graphics, and then the press kit promised
that the album was "cool like James Dean," and I've heard things don't get
much cooler than that. However, the album itself turned out to be nothing
more than a couple of layers of cheesy disco beat tracks with swirly special
effects backing up a female vocalist who sounds more like she's distractedly
singing to herself (under her breath, even) instead of along with actual
music. Also, the preprogrammed percussion is pushed so far in the foreground
that it makes the songs sound tinny and highly irritating, like having a bad
case of Tinnitus built right into the album for your listening pleasure.
