THE SAUCERS
What We Did (Grand Theft Audio)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
A fantastic archival release from the fine folks at Grand Theft Audio.
The Saucers were formed by one Craig Bell, former bassist in both
Rocket From The Tombs and the Mirrors, after moving from Cleveland to
New Haven. Mark Mulcahy played drums, and he went on to be the lead
singer in Miracle Legion, and these days leads Polaris. Other members
during their brief duration included keyboardist Malcolm Doak,
guitarists Malcom Marsden and Seth Tivven and guitarist/keyboardist
Katherine Cormack. It seems that everybody sang. The band only
released two singles ("What We Do" /" I Didn't Get It" / "Muckraker"
on Orange and "A Certain Kind Of Shy" / "She's Alright" on Gustav)
and a song on the It Happened But Nobody Noticed compilation LP,
but recorded three different sessions with three different
incarnations of the band between 1977 and 1980. If you are a fan of
any of Bell's previous bands, you're certain to like this, and it is
really good stuff. It might be perhaps a little more accessible in
some ways than those bands, but nonetheless very cool. All the songs
were originals, including versions of Bell-penned tunes like
"Muckraker" and "Frustration" (also recorded by RFTTs) and "Annie" (also
recorded by the Mirrors). Of particular note is their version of
"Final Solution," a song recorded and played live by RFTTs and also
by the band formed out of Rocket's ashes, Pere Ubu.
