SONNY LANDRETH
The Road We're On (Sugar Hill)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Since he burst on the scene as a teenage phenom backing Clifton Chenier,
Sonny Landreth has carved out a space as the go-to slide guitar guy for
everyone who wants to get a bit of his patented swamp sound into their
music. On his solo albums, though, it's really his songwriting that shines,
and The Road We're On, his second Sugar Hill release, is no exception.
There are twelve new Sonny Landreth compositions on the disc, and while they
all reveal his strong roots in the Delta blues, they also reveal just how
diverse the Delta style can be, from the acoustic boogie of "Juke Box Woman"
to the electric stomp of the title track. Overall, the album rocks harder
than his last outing, but once again Landreth proves that he's more than
just another Strat-slinging burner. He's a complete package - a writer,
player and singer with a distinctive musical vision.
