WALT KELLY
Songs Of The Pogo (Reaction/Parasol)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
The other Walt, Kelly certainly made his mark in cartooning, and though the hey-day of Pogo has passed, there's nothing wrong with a little flashback. After leaving the Disney studios in the forties, Kelly struck out on his own with the world's most famous possum, resulting in a much loved daily comic strip, millions of books sold, and yep, you guessed it, a record. One full blown LP and a couple of singles (collected conveniently on this CD) all from the very furtive mind of Kelly himself. Why he even gets to sing on three numbers. This is happy go-lucky good time uh, merry melodies, but just like the strip, contains a sly philosophical bent, absurdist nonsense and some cutting observations only a possum in search of a tree to lie under could get away with. A grand bit of nostalgia when we most need it.
