THE PAPERBOYS
Postcards (Stony Plain/Stompy Discs)

The hackneyed reel reel jig formula of Celtic rock gets an adventurous makeover courtesy of The Paperboys. Spiking up traditional Celtic sounds with World beats, Flamenco flavours and Bluegrass stomps, actually works quite effectively, injecting more spike to the punch. And though the Latin numbers will elicit most attention (from both ends of the polar spectrum I should think), it is the wonderful dobro and mandolin work on the Bluegrass numbers that I fancy. The Paperboys know enough to slow down the usual frantic barnstomping Celtic pace, giving the fiddle a new dimension and seeping emotion into the tunes.
