JOHNNY DOWD
Temporary Shelter (Koch)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Good God somebody call the cops! A master of the gloomy dirge, Johnny Dowd sends
creepy shivers up and down my yellow spine with disturbing ease. Even when the
tempo shifts to something with timely beats, Dowd manages to sustain an
unnerving cloud with chilling subject matter delivered with an insistently
monotone delivery. The music is stretched on this his third record, though Dowd
feverishly holds on to his chief forte: creating addictively fascinating songs
with the unsettling ability to make anyone squirm. Powerful stuff not to be
taken lightly.
