LOVE AS LAUGHTER
Sea To Shining Sea (Sub Pop)

When it comes right down to it, Love as Laughter crank out outdated rooster rawk that may have had longhairs nodding in approval bliss some decades back, which now seems so passe. Which makes the fact that I can't get this beastly slab out of the CD player all the more disturbing. Have I finally succumbed to my Grand Funk withdrawal, or is there something to these pranksters? Could be both. The bombastic riffs come fast and furious. Everything is so over the top, in a massive pulse of cohesion, that the onslaught becomes quite irresistible. There have been several doomed attempts at reviving various sundry aspects of the seventies; this one actually stands a chance. Anyone with enough chutzpa to pipe in canned applause, arena style (as they do on "Put It Together") deserves a close listen, and a poster spot on your bedroom wall.
