THE RACHEL NEVADAS
Viva Problems (Jub-Jub Records)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Viva Problems is the second album by the Rachel Nevadas, a Richmond, VA
based quintet. Although their lineup - guitar, drums, bass, trombone and
sax - hints at another third wave ska outfit that hasn't got the news yet (I
mean, really, there were some good bands, but it's, like, so 20th century!),
this is actually a rock n' roll band. A pretty damn good one.
There's a quirky sense of humor underlying much of the material here that
adds to the overall appeal of the band, which is a smart, college radio
ready, act which uses its horn section to set its sound apart rather than to
refer back to other, earlier styles of music. Definitely worth a listen,
it's also worth checking out their website at www.TheRachelNevadas.com to
find out how your aquisition of this disc can contribute to the 9/11 relief
efforts.
