SAFRI DUO
Episode II (MCA)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Uffe Savery and Morten Friis are a pair of classically trained Danish
percussionists who, having grown weary of white tie performances for the
crowned heads set, have augmented their musical arsenal of drums with
marimba, vibes and some noisemakers of their own devising and set off to
conquer the dance club world. They've had some success on European dance
floors and now they're heading for America. If this disc fall into the
hands of the right DJs, they should do just fine in the States, as well.
It wouldn't surprise me if they end up better known as a source of samples
for the remix masters of the club world than for the music they produce in
their own right, but that may be the price of being so percussion-centric.
Even drum & bass has, well, bass. Not that they don't sweeten the sound
here with their own synthesized flourishes, but ultimately they are, in
fact, drummers. Really good drummers. Which leads to really good beats.
Which leads to massive sampling.
Which could turn out just fine. Meanwhile, Episode II is worth some spins
in your machine in its own right.
