Daddy-O Daddy (Rounder)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Despite popular sentiment, Woody Guthrie's best work was in his childrens songs.
His simple, repetitive, inventive, playful and inspired tunes are timeless, and
the unearthing of several buried treasures is cause for celebration. Six new
ones, previously unrecorded, see the light of day on this tribute record. Uneven
yes, but what trib ain't, Daddy-O Daddy pulses with a warmth Woody surely would
have approved of. Taj Mahal, Syd Straw, Joe Ely and Jimmy Dale Gilmore deliver
joyous renditions and Woody himself bookends the album with a sweet reading of
"Howdy Little Newlycome."
