CADY FINLAYSON
Shines Like Silver (self-released)
Reviewed by Holly Day
The trouble with Irish reels, and most of traditional Irish music in
general, is when it's performed in a formal setting, such as a recording
studio, there's a tendency for it to sound like the finished product was to
be turned in for a Music 101 final - stiff, formal, and just too planned, and
this music always sounds best live with room for crazy improvisation and
jocular stage talk. This CD is no exception, and while all the performers on
here, especially fiddler Finlayson, are wonderfully adept musicians, the CD
as a whole is a little too tame and dry for my tastes.
