IVY
Guestroom (Minty Fresh)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Ordinarily, I'd be looking forward to a new Ivy album in hopes of hearing
some freshly penned tunes from the pop trio. There's not a new song to be
found on Guestroom, but that turns out to be not the least bit
disappointing. This collection includes covers ranging from Steely Dan to
the Go-Betweens, from the Cure to the Ronnettes, with many interesting stops
between each of those options. Adam Schlessinger (also of Fountains of
Wayne fame), Andy Chase and Dominique Durand take ownership of each tune,
whether familiar to all or obscure to most, though, with fresh arrangements
in their peppy pop style, always tinged with just a hint of melancholy to
keep the sound from rotting your teeth.
And yes, fellas, that French accent gives me those same, ummm, "special"
feelings, but Dominique and Andy seem to be getting along just fine, with
their second kid due in December, so just hit the replay button and imagine.
Track List: Let's Go To Bed * Kite * Say Goodbye * Streets Of Your Town * I
Don't Know Why I Love You * Only A Fool Would Say That * Digging Your Scene
* L'Anamour * Be My Baby * I Guess I'm Just A Little Too Sensitive
