OPERATION MAKEOUT
Hang Loose (Mint)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
I barely got through the first song on this one because there was just too much slop without
anything that felt like character to compensate. I did get through it, though, and the second
song took me by surprise. It was then that I realized Operation Makeout is all about texture,
and their sound - rolling tom-toms, growling bass, unusual guitar chords and lead vocals traded
back and forth between guitarist Katie and bassist Jesse - can grow on you quickly if you're not
fighting it. It's a very noisy sound (imagine if someone had bothered to turn up the treble
on the sound board during a Mission Of Burma session), but appealing. In the end you can say
they're not the most skilled band in Vancouver, B.C. and I won't argue because that scene is
loaded. You can't say they don't have an interesting sound, though.
