Book: Dude, Where's My Country
Written by Michael Moore (Warner Books)

Reviewed by Rusty Pipes

Michael Moore got some boos amid the cheers at the Academy Awards last Spring when he cried, "Shame on you Mr. Bush!" a few days into his "fictitious war." I think he'd get much more cheers than boos today; especially from those of us who have read Dude, Where's My Country. I know I'm cheering!

One thing we can all rely on Bush for is to give a guy like Michael Moore plenty of material. Iraq, Homeland Security and a trashed economy have made Dude Where's My Country even stronger than Moore's last book, Stupid White Men, which was written just before 9-11. Writing as an Everyman speaking to Everyothermanandwoman, Moore does engage in some light moments (a short chapter, "Jesus W. Christ," has God explaining why he not behind the Resident) but in general he has less jokes than Al Franken's Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tells Them. Some chapters are instructional ("How To Talk To Your Conservative Brother-In-Law"), some continue Bowling For Columbine themes ("The United States Of Boo") and others run down governmental lies ("Home Of The Whopper").

Mostly though this book serves as a call to arms for a new campaign -- "Bush Removal 2004." Mike's first choice for President? Oprah Winfrey. In our brave new Schwarzenegger era I think he actually has something there, but she almost certainly won't run. However among the declared Democratic candidates, he's picked Wesley Clark. Interesting. Especially since the book was written long before the General declared as a candidate. Moore's endorsement may well have been a big reason he jumped in to the Democratic Mosh Pit. Moore certainly puts forth a good case for him, but I will let you decide for yourself.

Anyway, the book is a huge success which is hugely heartening. I expect a smear bio of Moore any day from Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly or somebody like them.

And stay tuned, in the spirit of liberal fairness, I will provide a review of Ann Coulter's Treason soon. As soon as I can check it out from the public library of course. Wouldn't want any of Dubya's tax cut going into the wrong sectors of the economy now!
