Audio Book: Silas Marner
Written by George Eliot (The Audio Partners)

Reviewed by Erick Mertz

George Eliot - or as she was born, Mary Ann Evens - was a Victorian humanist whose books include the luminary novels Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss and Middlemarch. A middle career work, Silas Marner is the most accessible work by an author whose work is often compared to Fydor Dostoevesky for her narrative technique. It is an endearing tale of innocence and guilt and, moreover, the redemptive power of love. As a depiction of fleeting early 19th Century England, it is a marvel and for its storytelling, an absolute classic.

Fans of the cult favorite program Fawlty Towers should know the voice of Andrew Sachs. The veteran British actor of theater, film, television and radio brings a dignified, almost rarified air to the reading. Eliot's words - those which earned her the title of the greatest living writer of English - are lucky to undergo his touch.
