ANA POPOVIC
Comfort to the Soul (Ruf Records)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
Ana Popovic is a rising European blues star whose light has shone on both sides of the Atlantic. She was nominated in the Best New Artist category at this year's W.C. Handy Awards in Memphis, and last year, she was up for the French blues awards for best singer, guitar player and album of the year (for her earlier Ruf release, Hush!). Ana's forceful playing ranges from the opening "Don't Bear Down on Me (I'm Here to Steal the Show)" to a jazz-tinged take on Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's "Night By Night," and her flashy treatment of Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' On Top of the World." Yugoslavia's loss is our gain: Ana's touring with Michael Hill's Blues Mob in the Midwest and East Coast this month, and if you can, catch her before she returns home to Europe.

Don't Bear Down on Me (I'm Here to Steal the Show) * Love Me Again * Comfort to the Soul * Change My Mind * Sittin' On Top of The World * Night By Night * Navajo Moon * Need All the Help I Can Get * Recall the Days * Fool Proof * Jaco
