CAVE CATT SAMMY
Whiskey And The Devil (Rubric)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Bad luck boozy laments done up in fine swinging rockabilly style; impeccably played, bouncy, crystal clear guitar tunes juiced up by classic fifties era backing harmonies. Tasty melodic stuff, with an odd content edge. The hair is meticulously groomed and dangerously greasy. The cars are fast and the girls are slow. The great days gone by feel is exemplified by "Cast Iron Arm," a seething reworking of Roy Orbison's forgotten nugget about a bowling lane date about to turn into a rumble. It's as if the gang on Happy Days were boozers: troubles yes, but everyone still pulls through and has a grand fun time at the sock hop. All bobbysocks, ducktails, malt shops, silver flasks and lost girlfriends. Sure Cave Catt Sammy's in the doghouse, but it sounds like a good place to hang out.
