FLARE

This record is so close to being really wonderful that it just drives me
crazy that it isn't. The instrumentation is clever and interesting, with
violins and cellos and accordions and piano and chimes and other neat
things, and the lyrics are brilliant and sarcastic and biting and extremely
self-deprecating, but for some reason, the finished product falls a little
flat. I think it's because it comes off too mellow and measured where it
should be more sincere and out-of-control - I could be off-base here, but I
think it's a true feeling of sincerity that this lacks. Like I said, it's
just short of being absolutely wonderful, but it falls just short.
