HiM
Many in High Places are Not Well (Bubble Core)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Boy, I really used to love this "band" - since it's mostly a Doug Scharin
project, and each record features a different cast of guest musicians, it's
more a loose conglomeration than anything - but with each passing release,
HiM gets tamer and more like something my dad would sit around and listen
to than anything I'm really into. Which means, of course, that the music is
more predictable, mellow, occasionally offbeat in more acceptable ways and
more concerned with technical perfection than unwieldy originality. I miss
the wild and crazy-sounding HiM from several albums back - this one steps a
little too far into Pat Methany-jam territory for me to be really
comfortable with it.
