ORNA
The Very Thought Of You (A440 Music Group)

Reviewed by Ron Saranich

The Very Thought Of You is the debut recording by South African born vocalist Orna. Quite frankly, it's one of the best vocal cds I've heard in a long time. The 10 songs are all familiar ballads given either contemporary jazz or samba interpretations. However, it's what Orna does with these classics songs that makes this a must buy recording. First and foremost, it's the sound of her voice. It has a sensual, smokey, intimate tone that crawls inside your head and won't let go. Next, it's Orna's ability to perfectly articulate the emotional message of each number in an almost hauntingly poignant style. Finally, it's her right-on chart arrangements that are evocative while avoiding easy choices. All of these qualities contribute to a recording that soars with each listening.

The musicians on this cd are Brian Bromberg on acoustic bass and acoustic piccolo bass guitar; Tom Zink on piano and keyboards; Chris Wabich on drums and percussion; Tony Guerrero on trumpet and flugel horn; Gannin Arnold on guitar; and Gary Meeks on flute. The band sounds well integrated and inspired. Favorite songs include: "The Very Thought Of You," "That's All," "My One And Only Love," and "Ornithology."

The Very Thought Of You is one of those special recordings where the vocalist sounds like she/he is singing to you and you alone. Hopefully Orna continues to grow and mature as an artist. If so, I expect great things from her. I highly recommend this cd for all lovers of eloquent, superbly crafted jazz vocals.
