SCALA
On The Rocks (Pias)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Now THIS is scary! Twin brothers coerce sixty teenage girls to sing radio staples! Only in Belgium. This cult choir of sweet angelic voices strip the beat from rock and roll, leaving a solitude style slab of soothing melodies James Last would surely envy. Yes there is something magically diabolical about golden throats piping "she fuckin' hates me," but what is actually going on here? Is it a bit of fun? Is it a serious ode? Is it ignorance? What it is, is redundant. The Langley Music Project did it right: covering timeless pop standards with innocence, charm and crashing cymbals! Scala offer up mushy Elton John stylings of forgettable songs by Wheatus and Muse. Lovely yes, but do we really need lovely? A good old fashioned record burning is in order to restore order in the real world of rock and roll.
