TIM LEE
Under The House (Paisley Pop)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
One half of the Windbreakers, whose retrospective CD I reviewed
a couple months ago. I should also mention that the CD I reviewed
was apparently a defective copy and the sound problems I heard
were actually a manufacturing problem, not a mastering problem,
and the replacement CD that was sent sounds fine. On Tim Lee's
solo CD, the sound is definitely quieter, and more melancholy.
It's also really, really good. Songs like "Without Action,"
buoyed by incredible sounding e-bowed baritone and tremolo
guitars, and "Just Another Day," are slow, sad and beautiful all
at the same time. There's honesty, a certain "realness" that
permeates these songs, which all seem like real life stories
set to music. The simple instrumentation of Lee on various
electric and acoustic guitars, John T. Baker on bass and
guitar, Jim Rivers on guitar and keys, and various drummers,
works well for the stripped-down and atmospheric nature of the
material.
