BLAKE WALTERS
Downtown Baby (Little Bear)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Sardonic power pop may not be the latest fashion, but there's always room to squeeze another forgotten genre into the mix. Blake Walters' peppy love songs are laced with biting lyrics and a shifting pace reminiscent of They Might Be Giants: playful and prone to standard lalala pop cliches. If he were two then that would suffice, but Walters is a solo act, and that means relegation to the dreaded singer songwriter bin. And thus he becomes more of a Canadian Paul Kelly: slipping sappy songs into the fray when yer not paying attention. Clever boy.
