CHUCK JACKSON
The Best of Chuck Jackson - Millennium Collection (Hip-O)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
During his tenure with Wand Records in the 1960s, Chuck Jackson made a
number of appearances on the pop Hot 100, but his principle success was on
the R&B charts, scoring top 10 hits with songs like "I Don't Want To Cry," "Any Day Now" and his duet with Maxine Brown on "Something You Got." When
he wasn't racking up chart hits, he was a top headliner in the R&B clubs
that made up the fabled 'Chitlin' Circuit.'
Like many R&B traditionalists, chart success often eluded Jackson after the
1960s, but there were exceptions, and the later tracks here are, in fact,
exceptional as well. This collection includes several cuts that are
essential additions to any R&B collection, and the lesser known material is
well worth your attention as well. Chuck Jackson is often mentioned in the
company of soul legends like Sam Cooke and Jerry Butler, and the comparisons
are apt, and as flattering to his more famous contemporaries as to him.
