EMILIE AUTUMN
Enchant (Traitor Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Can't say I was much surprised by this CD - I was expecting it to be some
kind of trippy neo-filk kind of music, and it was. The cover sporting a
girl wearing fairy wings and purple hair was a big tip-off. So yeah, there
are a bunch of classical instruments on here, like pianos and stringed
instruments, and then there are some girly danceable songs, and way too
much fairy-tale imagery for me. The vocals try to be deep and soulful but
sound more like something written for and performed by an American Idol
kid, too forced without the depth of experience behind them, not to mention
the occasional lapses of tunelessness and breathlessness that leave even
the listener gasping for a comma in the lyric stream.
