THE GROOVE HOGS
Blue Rhythms White Lies (Pixel Max Entertainment)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
I don't know too much about The Groove Hogs, but I do know that this 10-piece
band plays some pretty strong grooves straight out of Memphis (think Stax),
Detroit (ditto Motown), or Philadelphia (recall the Sound of that city). Adam
Enevoldsen is the lead Groove Hog on vocals and slide guitar, with Brian
Gruselle on keyboards, and John Stelzer plays drums and John Laws lays down the
bass. The Groove Hogs also feature a forceful full-on horn section with Adam
Plamann on baritone sax, Steve Cooper on tenor sax, Doug Daniels on alto and
tenor saxes, and Greg Garcia on trumpet. Blue Rhythms White Lies features jazz
and blues magic with 11 cuts that boogie like "Soul Infatuation" or slow,
two-steps like "Waiting On You." Fans of horn-fueled blues and soul will enjoy
the tight sound on Blue Rhythms White Lies, captured by producer Jim Gaines,
who's produced a constellation of artists ranging from John Lee Hooker, Carlos
Santana and Jimmy Thackery, to Coco Montoya. Sample Blue Rhythms White Lies or the
three other Groove Hogs CDs at www.groovehogs.com.
