JACOB TWO-TWO
The Elastic Heart Of Youth (Coqi)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Just exactly what is it about Jacob Two-Two that endears them to Ottawa (Canada, the centre of the Universe where we spell centre like the Brits) in such a "give up the love" manner? That is the question I have been wrestling with. Their bouncy mix of folk and soul and jazz crosses pretty well every genre, and you can't really pin them down as anything specific. Perfect for mainstream print media, and available as airplay fodder on various campus/community radio station shows. Clever lyrics and swell he/she vocals equals an in at the CBC. It's all well sung and well played, with a nice balance of tight and loose musicianship, slipping into that all Canadian melodic pop niche that The Barenaked Ladies helped revive. Hey, it's not really my cup of tea, but obviously everyone else is ordering pots.
