MARILYN SCOTT
Nightcap (Prana Entertainment)

Reviewed by Ron Saranich

If you are a fan of jazz and adult contemporary vocals, check out Nightcap, the latest offering from singer/songwriter Marilyn Scott. Scott has recorded an eloquent, emotionally satisfying CD covering eight jazz standards. For this effort, Scott is joined by Brandon Fields on sax; Rick Baptist on trumpet; Ray Fuller on guitar; Brian Bromberg, upright bass; Dan Higgens, flute; Dori Caymmi on guitar; and Vinnie Colaiula on drums. George Duke, the producer, joins Scott to play piano on one song.

Scoot's voice at times reminds me of Chris Conner, formerly with Stan Kenton. It is expressive, sincere, passionate, and sexy, depending on the mood of the tune. Scott is a master at creating a bewitching atmosphere where the listener is totally absorbed in the song. As a result, time passes quickly. Too quickly in fact as the CD is a bit short, clocking in at about 40 minutes. I inevitably find myself wishing the recording went on for another three to four songs. But that is my only criticism of this fine offering. Give it a listen, you'll walk away impressed with Marilyn Scott and Nightcap, a genuinely moving performance.
