THE SOUND OF RAILS
Night Time Simulcast (Caulfield Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This record reminds me a lot of the early Sonic Youth stuff, complete with
droning guitars and barely-heard conversational muttering in the
background, heavy handed guitar leads and screaming, beautiful melodramatic
crescendos at all the right moments. The opening track, "Rulo," especially
reminds me of Sonic Youth, like one of those songs that Kim Gordon would
have sung/told a story to, except with a male vocalist instead of a female
one. The album is pretty cool on its own, though, although I'd probably be
happier with it if it didn't sound so much like Sonic Youth. The nice thing
about getting so old, though, I think, is that all this music that I loved
20 years ago is being rediscovered by a new generation, and those new bands
are putting out cool music influenced by the old stuff and trying to make
it sound fresh and new.
