THE WES HOLLYWOOD SHOW
Moonraker (self-released)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
If there's ever been a knock on the Wes Hollywood Show, it hasn't been
related to their talent, which is evident and abundant, but to a stubborn
loyalty to a sound that was rooted deeply in 'My Aim Is True' vintage Elvis
Costello (with Hollywood's physical resemblance to Costello only enhancing
the connection). On Moonraker that point is laid to rest, as the Chicago
based rockers expand their musical palette by incorporating a far wider
range of power pop influences, particularly, though not imitatively, the
Beatles.
The result is an album I might not have picked out as Wes Hollywood if I'd
heard it before seeing it, but that I would have unreservedly designated
terrific regardless. I've been a big fan of the band for years, and this is
undoubtedly their best effort yet. If pop music played by people with lots
of talent and an obvious love for their material sounds like something you
might enjoy, this is an album you will love.
