THE FROGS
Racially Yours (4 Alarm Records)

Say goodbye to 4 Alarm Records. The inevitable backlash from this racially challenging record will no doubt bury the tiny independent. On the shelf in the forbidden fruit section since '94, Racially Yours finally sees the light of day and actually lives up to it's infamy: an outrageous opus that takes a daring stab at the white/black issues in a blunt, offensive manner that could be both foolish and brilliant. It certainly has it's moments. Take the simple yet dynamic line "black is not a colour". As they were apt to do in the early days, The Frogs don black and white face, literally and musically, offering up blunt verses through the voices of white bigots and black reactionaries. Concocting a wonderful pop album laced with incendiary lyrics, The Frogs come off a tad like Ween, though a little further out on that parody ledge for most tastes. The Frogs make challenging music sure to confuse darn near everyone, myself included. Is it sarcasm? Is it a brilliant, subversive opera? Is it a grope in the dark? Whatever it is, it's out there now, and the sparks will fly.
