GRANT LEE PHILLIPS
Mobilize (Zoe)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Somewhere along the way Grant Lee lost his Buffalo, but not his ability to
create superior
pop songs. Travelling the country with Robyn Hitchcock seems to have had an
effect, as
Phillips injects a decidedly surreal quality into his music. The dreamy, okay
almost flighty,
instrumental backing can be a bit unsettling, but Phillips knows of what he
does, setting
up his sumptuous tenor wonderfully. Yes those are electronically generated drum
beats, but
when presented in such a subtle, complimentary and darn catchy manner, it ceases
to matter.
Phillips just wants to pour his heart out in song; a donor in search of a
recipient.
