THE NEWLYDEADS
Dead End (Cleopatra)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
There are two kinds of Halloween records: the cute ones like Monster Mash and
the
ones the make you feel like you're crawling through the spiderweb. And lovin'
it.
The Newlydeads make the second kind. This is the third effort by these refugees
from Faster Pussycat and Bang Tango. Don't let that scare you, though, because
Taime Downe (guitar/vocals), Meghan Mattox (bass) and Xristian Simon (guitar),
who
apparently don't need no steenking drummers, make music here that is far more
interesting and fun than that of their previous bands. "Lipstick" rocks harder
than
anything they used to do, even though you'd really have to consider Newlydeads'
music
to be industrial/goth. "Hot Pink Hot Rod" could become an anthem for that
gradually
growing sub-genre, and The Newlydeads could become big news if they put their
full
energy into it. Unfortunately, Taime Downe keeps getting Not As Fast As They
Used
To Be Pussycat together. HEY TAIME! You're onto something here. Your new band
kicks the proverbial ass even when simply tuning up. Sparks, Taime. You've got
sparks there. Go for it. This is hot shit and we want a lot more of it.
