WAYNE HANCOCK
A-Town Blues (Bloodshot)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Wayne "The Train" Hancock delivers slap (bass) happy honky tonk country blues
like no other
since Hank Williams. And he sounds eerily like Hank to boot. Hancock's about-to-
yodel drawl
is a blessing indeed, and he puts it to good use. As is custom with his records
(this is
number four), Hancock records direct off the floor, capturing all the
spontaneity, energy
and mistakes that make a true old timey recording. The result, whether it be
twangy country
dirges ("Man of the Road"), chugging rockabilly numbers ("Sands of Time") or
archaic, bluesy
swingers ("Viper"), is an album ready for the jukebox in any self-respecting
diner.
