CATHERINE IRWIN
Cut Yourself A Switch (Thrill Jockey)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Though her harmonizing with Janet Beveridge Bean in Freakwater is a thing of beauty, it is indeed a greater pleasure to hear the croaky voice of Catherine Irwin on its own. Employing minimal accompaniment (drums on only one track), Irwin weaves a sparse, depression-era country record. Such a gloomy disc (spurned love, slapped faces, shallow graves), and such a thrilling voice; a lethal combination.
