DISSENT
Bleeding Together (Wide Hive)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Led by Gregory Howe, who is also the head honcho of the Wide Hive collective
that provides the imprint for the recording, a San Francisco area studio and
performance space and, from reliable reports, a fine mocha latte, Dissent is
an assemblage of musicians that are generally filed under the heading "acid
jazz." Personally, I think that's about one of the most meaningless tags in
the world of music, which is just chock full of meaningless tags. In this
case, it means that the music of Dissent is beyond easy categorization,
combining jazz improv, world rhythms, pop sensibilities and just plain solid
groove in a set of excellent compositions brilliantly executed.
Did I mention that I don't exactly understand it but I like it a lot?
