I Love Serge: Electronic Againsbourg (Pagan)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

It es, how you say, sex-see, no? This one's been on the market for over a year, but I'm slow as molasses, so I'm just getting to it now. 14 modern electronica artists pay tribute to one of the most unusual musicians of the 20th century: Serge Gainsbourg.

Serge made decidedly dangerous music in Paris for the better part of 30 years, living a lifestyle that made his music seem like a watered-down memoir, exciting though it was. Among his many lovers was Bridget Bardot, with whom he made some provocative and highly successful records. His breakaway hit, however, was a 1969 duet with Jane Birken entitled "Je T'Aime... Moi, Non Plus," an unveiled slow dance of pure eroticism that was banned in half the countries of the world. Here, it is unfurled slowly by Dzihan & Kamien on I Love Serge, or at least it feels like gentle foreplay to those of us who don't speak French. They aren't saying "What's on television tonight, dear" between all the heavy breathing. The heavy breathing, by the way, is in English. I understand the heavy breathing.

The Orb takes on "Requiem Pour Un C..." and there's obviously passion for the material. "Sea, Sex & Sun" gives the disc a little bit of funk flavoring, courtesy of Demon Ritchie and one nasty - if canned - bass line. There's an aura around all of this music, created by the man these artists are paying tribute to. It's an erotic aura with more than a hint of madness, well conveyed in most cases on this CD, that would have sounded perfectly normal to the late, great Serge Gainsbourg.
