PARIS COMBO
Attraction (Ark 21)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Attraction is a perfect title for the latest from Paris Combo, because
that's what I feel every time I hear the sound of this French quintet, which
blends cabaret pop and Gypsy jazz into an invariably attractive musical
package. Once again vocalist/accordianist Belle du Berry's voice produces
an undeniable quality of sex appeal, and the backing by guitarist Potzi,
trumpeter/keyboardist Dave Lewis, bassist Mano Razanajato and percussionist
Francios-Francios creates a background that's a throwback to classic
Parisian cabaret with avant-garde overtones that make the sound completely
contemporary.
The entire band contributes to the songwriting with instrumental chores
shared by various individuals and combinations and du Berry contributing
all the lyrics. My French is limited to translating wine labels, for the
most part, so I don't really have a clue what she's singing about, but I
like to imagine that it's about how long she's waited to meet me at a table
in a little cafe for a bottle of wine before an afternoon of bliss. Or
something. Whatever it's about, this stuff sure sounds good.
