VOODOO GLOW SKULLS
Steady As She Goes (Victory)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
Some things stay the same, thank God. While the rest of the U.S. has changed drastically
since 9/11, at least I could count on a few things before I even put the new Voodoo Glow
Skulls CD in the player: I'd barely understand a word, it'd be so fast I wouldn't have
time to try to figure it out, and it would smoke! Sure enough, I caught a few dozen
words at best, and I nearly sprained my neck trying, so I quit trying and enjoyed
the power rush. VGS always makes me want to run around in fast, crazed circles, but I'm
too old and lazy so I just air drum until my arms hurt. At the moment it hurts to type!
This is a typical (read: powerful, hot, kick ass, in-your-face, breakneck-paced) VGS album
with their usual mix of metallic power, ska rhythms, south of the border spice an NASCAR
tempos. Note: It comes with lyrics in the liner notes. Up to you. If "This used to be
the place you used to want to be" makes you go "Ugh," fold up the liners, put them back in
the jewel box and just run in fast circles and catch every 64th word. By the way, there's
an unlisted bonus track that happens to be a wild cover of Sam The Sham's "Little Red Riding
Hood," which is nice icing on an already tasty cake.
