Concert: The Bellrays
10 September 2003 (The Dominion Tavern; Ottawa, Canada)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

With opening sludge meisters Nebula cranking out a thundering Sabbath style power trio stoner rock at dangerous decibels, ya had to wonder just what decade is this? The Bellrays quickly remedied that time warp with a blistering set of ultra tight scorchers, delivered from the oh so cozy confines of the puny Dominion stage (if you can call it that). Jam crammed it was, as the line between crowd and band dissipated rather quickly. The music may be all Tony Fate (guitar), but the show is all Lisa Kekaula. Busting out of a tight dress, spiked heels digging into the floorboards, an afro reaching for the heavens, Kekaula belts and struts like nobody's business, dishing out equal parts straight ahead rawk and soul. The records are really an injustice.
