Concert: Bonnie Prince Billy

On a night off from supporting Bjork, Will Oldham wandered on to an Ottawa stage to deliver his folky sermon. Desperate whisper tunes from the back country played stark solo in a noisy bar sounds like a perfect Martha Stewart recipe for disaster, but Oldham not only managed to persevere, but turned that old black magic switch on. After playing a well received but rather lackluster set, Bonnie opened the floor to requests. The floodgates opened as die hard fanatics lived out their Palace Music wet dreams for the rest of the night. About as warm and informal as one could hope. The crawly version of "I See a Darkness" did it for me.
