DAVIE ALLAN & THE ARROWS
Restless In L.A. (Sundazed)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
Davie Allan, the king of fuzzed out guitar instros, strikes back
with his first new album - the Ramonetures LP of instro
versions of Ramones songs he did with Phantom Surfers members
aside - since 1999. Aided by his faithful Arrows, he cranks
out a selection of great instros like "The Toxic Terror,"
"Quiver" and "Arrow Highway." He also revisits his
contributions to '60s B-movie soundtracks by doing a new
version of "Theme From The Wild Angels." A first here is the
inclusion of two tunes with actual vocals, those being a great
cover of the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last
Night)" and the fuzz-wah filled "Wicked Woman." Also cool is
the organ-fueled "The Loud, The Loose and The Savage," which
was also the title of his 1994 "comeback" CD, and is a tribute
to Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western soundtracks. In a
perfect world, it would be people like Davie Allan who are lauded as guitar heros over washed-up hacks like Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen, but alas, Allan remains a cult hero. At least he still puts out great music!
