MATCHES F.C.
self-titled (self-released)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
Here's a newish New York City group bashing out some fine
Mod-influenced powerpop, with hints of '60s garage rock and
'70s glam. Four original tunes, not including the brief reprise
at the end of "Hot Sugar," the catchy lead-off song on this
demo CDEP. The guitar/bass/drums sound is augmented on two
tracks - "She Makes Me" and "Bad Decisions" - by some cool
keyboards. The crunchy guitar work and rhythm of all four songs
brings to mind bands like the Kinks, the Who, Small Faces, the
Jam, the Chords, the Plimsouls, the Prisoners, the Mod Fun, and
any of Billy Childish's numerous bands.
