THE PREACHER'S KIDS
Wild Emotions (Get Hip)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
Recorded with the VU meter needles decidedly in the red, Wild Emotions rocks hard enough and with enough fun factor to overcome the total track distortion that could have trashed it. For some people, distortion on a crash cymbal is a natural choice, but I require compensation, which I get from Tyler Keith and company because the songs are so energizing. Is it the very distortion I single out as the only negative that's actually doing the energizing? No. It's The Preacher's Kids' enthusiastic, joyful performance of the material, be it a straight ahead blast of energetic garage punk like "Animal Instinct," a bit of Bowie-inflected rock and roll like "Sweet Bitch" or something that might have been right out of the early 60s London R&B cookbook like "Respect Me." Wow. Distorted maracas make a sound very similar to one I heard right before my car threw a rod.
